As an executive mom juggling work deadlines, school drop-offs and everything in between, it can be confusing and frustrating when back and nerve pain seems to show up out of nowhere. Maybe there was no new activity or injury to trigger this pain but it feels like the one that you had years ago during your pregnancy. You may be wondering if this could possibly be the old pain flaring up or are you just imagining it. In this blog lets discuss why many moms experience back and nerve pain years after pregnancy.
Pregnancy changes more than your belly! During pregnancy, your centre of gravity shifts forward to accommodate your growing baby. To compensate, your spine adjusts, especially in the lower back and neck. Your pelvis may tilt, your core weakens, and your shoulders round forward, specially with breastfeeding and baby carrying. Sadly these changes don’t just auto-correct after delivery. In fact, many women unknowingly carry those changes into their daily routines for years.
The postural shifts your body made during pregnancy don’t always reset on their own. These altered postures can place constant strain on your spine, joints, muscles and nerves. Over time, this may create chronic pain, stiffness or even tingling and numbness, especially in your lower back, hips and down your legs. But here is the surprising part: When these altered postures stick around your brain begins to treat this misalignment as your new normal. Thanks to a concept called neuroplasticity, your brain rewires itself based on repetition. So if you have been moving or sitting in a certain way for months or years your nervous system actually adapts to it even if it is causing harm to your body. This “learned posture” becomes your default, making it harder to return to balance without intentional retraining.
On top of that, the modern lifestyle makes it worse. Layer in long hours at a desk, frequent phone use and repeatedly lifting toddlers or groceries with less than ideal form and the stress on your body multiplies. You may not be doing anything “wrong” You have just never had the support to reset your posture and movement after pregnancy. That’s why these aches and nerve issues creep in during your 40s and 50s, long after the baby years.
However you don’t need extreme workouts or expensive treatments. What you need is a ways to gently retrain your body’s alignment and posture, so your muscles can support you correctly again. Learn more here on "How do you know if you have a good Sitting Posture?"
