What is degeneration of the spine and joints?
Degeneration of the spine and joints can be an overwhelming diagnosis when you hear it for the first time. You may wonder what it means in terms of your long hours at work, family commitments and busy lifestyle as a mum of younger kids who works in a high stress executive job. In this blog, lets discuss what is degeneration of the spine and joints and how is it applicable to your lifestyle.

Degeneration is a condition that affects the spine and joints in the body as they naturally wear out with years of use. In scientific terms degeneration is defined as a gradual loss of normal structure and function of the spine/joints over time. This can result in symptoms such as pain, stiffness and limited mobility.

However the term degeneration can be widely used for these symptoms. It can be mild with no or minimal symptoms that may or may not be felt physically and may be even an accidental finding on a scan or Xray. Moderate degeneration can be seen as ache or pains in the spine or joint that are manageable and may mildly interfere with daily activities, such as driving, walking, etc. Degeneration in the later stages can be severe and may manifest as increased pain and affects activities on a daily basis.

As the degeneration increases in severity it may lead to other problems in the spine and joints such as arthritisstenosisdisc herniation, etc. If the nerves are compressed or irritated due to the degenerative changes it may manifest as nerve pain which may cause symptoms like numbness, tingling, and weakness in the arms or legs. An example of this is lumbar spine degeneration that leads to sciatica pain.
