For executive mums juggling the demands of a high-stress job and managing younger kids, back pain can be a frequent and unwelcome companion. Among the various types of back pain, mechanical back pain is the most common. In this blog lets discuss what mechanical back pain feels like as recognising its symptoms can help in seeking appropriate care and managing this condition effectively.
Mechanical back pain originates from the spine, muscles, ligaments, or joints. Here are some common signs and symptoms of mechanical back pain:
1. Localized Pain: The pain is usually confined to the lower back, although it can occasionally spread to the buttocks or thighs. Unlike nerve pain, it rarely extends below the knee.
2. Dull, Aching Sensation: The pain often feels like a dull ache, which can range from mild to severe. It may be a constant discomfort or come and go in waves.
3. Stiffness: Mechanical back pain is often accompanied by stiffness, especially after periods of inactivity. This stiffness can make it difficult to move freely and can be particularly noticeable in the morning or after sitting for long durations.
4. Relief with Rest: The pain typically improves with rest. Lying down in a comfortable position may provide temporary relief, allowing the muscles and joints to relax.
5. Pain with Movement: Activities such as bending, lifting, or twisting can exacerbate the pain. It may also worsen with prolonged standing or sitting. For busy mums, this can mean discomfort when carrying children or sitting at a desk for long periods. This is in contrast with inflammatory back pain, that is typically seen as morning stiffness that improves with movement and worsen with rest. Here is a video explaining inflammatory back pain:
Some of the examples of mechanical back pain are lumbosacral strain, facet joint pain, degenerative disc disease
