You start the morning feeling fine. But after hours of spreadsheets, emails and back-to-back calls, a burning ache builds between your shoulder blades. You shift in your chair, sit up straighter or roll your shoulders, but the discomfort keeps returning. This is common when you spend long periods at a desk. It does not automatically mean your thoracic spine is out of alignment or your muscles are damaged. Sustained positions, limited movement and the demands of your workday can all contribute. In this blog, let’s look at why the sensation may build in your mid back and what you can do to make sitting more comfortable.
Why Your Mid Back May Feel Worse by 3pm:
Your upper and mid-back muscles help support and move your trunk and shoulder blades. When you stay in one position for a long time, some tissues work continuously while other areas move very little. This can lead to fatigue, stiffness or discomfort.
Leaning towards a screen, reaching for a distant keyboard or sitting without much back support may add to the effort. But there is no magic thirty-minute point when muscles suddenly become strained. Your tolerance depends on your position, workload, sleep and general stress levels.
How Stress Can Add to Mid Back Tension:
A demanding day can make physical discomfort feel more noticeable. When concentrating or under stress, you may unconsciously brace your shoulders, hold your breath or breathe more shallowly. Stress does not lock your ribcage or directly cause mid-back pain, but it can contribute to a feeling of tension. Try a few slow, comfortable breaths, allowing your lower ribs and abdomen to move gently. Let your shoulders soften rather than forcing a deep breath or stretching into pain.
Simple Desk Adjustments to Try Today:
You do not need expensive equipment or a perfect posture. Sit back so the chair supports you comfortably. Bring your keyboard and mouse close enough that your elbows can stay near your sides, and position your screen so you are not continually leaning forward.
More importantly, change position regularly. Between calls, stand up, walk briefly, roll your shoulders or gently rotate your upper back within a comfortable range. There is no single ideal sitting posture to hold all day; variety and movement matter.

Do Posture Correctors Help:
A posture corrector may remind you to change position, but it is not a complete solution on its own. It does not automatically weaken your muscles. However, it is recommended to use posture correctors with a focus on a comfortable workstation, movement breaks, regular movement and building strength and mobility.
If the burning is persistent, worsening, follows an injury or comes with chest pain, breathlessness, fever, numbness or weakness, seek medical advice rather than assuming it is posture-related.
