Can Inflammatory Back Pain Cause Nerve Pain?
For executive mums, dealing with the combined effects of inflammation and nerve pain can significantly impact both professional and personal life. The constant discomfort and pain can lead to decreased productivity, emotional stress, limited physical activity and disturbed sleep. All these can lead to an increase in fatigue levels and more brain fog, a problem that most mums already face. In this blog, lets explore the connection between inflammatory back pain and nerve pain and how they can exacerbate each other as this is crucial for finding effective relief and maintaining your well-being.

Inflammation is a natural response of the body's immune system to injury or infection. It’s meant to protect and heal, but when it becomes chronic, it can lead to persistent pain and other health issues. Inflammation can directly impact nerves, leading to a type of pain known as neuropathic pain. This occurs when inflamed tissues put pressure on nearby nerves or release chemicals that irritate nerve fibers.

Inflammatory back pain is associated with inflammation in the spine and is typically characterized by the following features:
  • Morning Stiffness: Inflammatory back pain typically causes stiffness and pain that is worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity. This stiffness usually lasts for more than a few minutes to a few hours.
  • Improvement with Movement: Unlike mechanical back pain, inflammatory pain tends to improve with physical activity and exercise.
  • Chronic Nature: Inflammatory back pain often persists for more than three months and can gradually worsen over time.
  • Systemic Symptoms: Other symptoms may include fatigue and general feelings of being unwell, which are not usually present with mechanical back pain.
Inflammatory back pain can stem from various sources such as repetitive stress injuriespoor posture or conditions like ankylosing spondylitis, arthritisdisc bulge etc. These can irritate the nerve, causing inflammation in the nerve that can eventually lead to nerve pain.

Nerve pain can manifest as sharp, shooting, tingling, numbness, dull ache or burning pain that can be debilitating and interfere with daily activities. The type of nerve pain depends on which fibres of the nerve are being pinched or irritated as different fibres of the nerve carry specific sensations. This can vary from a dull, achy nerve pain or pins and needles to numbness or feeling of hot and cold, burning or a sharp shooting pain or just discomfort or uneasiness that cannot be described by any of the above kinds of sensations. Here is a video explaining nerve pain:
